Homemade Chemical Free Air Freshener

Homemade Chemical Free Air Freshener

I love the smell of Bath and Body works.  For about 30 seconds.  Then the overpowering smash of scents and chemicals triggers the start of a migraine.  Even the hand lotions are too much.  I routinely ask my mom to wash that smell off and not to apply lotion while I’m with her. My poor family has been stuck in a world where the only scents allowed are vanilla, apple pie and pumpkin spice.  No air fresheners here.  And I have 2 dogs.  Yuck.

Until now! I was changing out the box of baking soda in my fridge and thought…… What about mixing the baking soda and some drops of essential oil to set around the house??  So off I went to see what containers I could find.

I found these 2 glass jars that would work.  Remember – doTERRA essential oils must be kept in glass jars.
But it looked a little too plain so I found this white ring and checker lid that had a cottage Christmas look to it.  I know! Thanksgiving first, but look how cute it is!!

I poked a few holes in the lid.  My hammer was missing so I took a pointy screw and my husband’s favorite screwdriver.
It’s ok, I’m pretty sure he took my hammer.
Don’t worry, the lids are thin.  A few taps with the end of the screwdriver and you’re done.
Then filled it about 3 quarters full of baking soda.
Now the hard part.  Which oil to use?
There were too many choices so I ended up making 2; A Lemon Lavender mix and a Peppermint.  It’s a wonderful smell that makes me think of snow and Christmas!  While one is in the dining room, the other one is in the kitchen.  They mingle together wonderfully.  I used 10 drops each of the lemon and lavender in one jar and 5 drops of the peppermint in another. The peppermint is very strong!
And when the scent runs out add a few more drops to refresh or sprinkle it on the carpets to use as a carpet deodorizer.  Lemon has natural antiseptic, antifungal and antiviral properties while Lavender has antidepressant, antifungal, antimicrobial and antihistamine properties.  Now that’s a carpet you can lay your new baby on and not worry.
So there you go.  Take the Thyme – to smell better!

doTERRA has just released the holiday blend, Holiday Joy.  I can’t wait to make another air freshener when my bottle arrives.
I think this would make a nice homemade gift.  Just be sure to wrap the lid with something before you transport it, like a holiday print fabric.  You can send in the Holiday joy, Elevation blend, Serenity blend or Lavender as a teacher gift for her classroom!

Not all essential oils are the same.  A lot have synthetic components even though they say ‘natural’ or ‘pure’.  I use doTERRA because they test each batch 6 different ways and guarantee the quality.  If you would like to purchase a doTERRA oil, here’s a link to my store.  http://www.mydoterra.com/TaketheThyme/

  1. Wendy--What a great idea! About how long would you say the scent lasts?

    1. Mine lasted about a month before I added more oil. I would walk by and shake the jar to 'stir' up the scent. :-)
